چکیده

What drives seemingly sellsh individuals in multi-agent systems to cooperate with each other? Our answer to the question is \kin preference." Kin preference helps to establish \habitats" that are composed of kin in population of rational agents. These habitats are resistant to invasion of enemies { that is, of non-kin. Results show the importance of kin preference in promoting cooperation and suggest kin preference may be used in many diierent domains to promote cooperation. The notion of kin in this study is not limited to biological resemblance; any common characteristics of two given individuals, such as religious preferences, native languages, height of the individuals, etc., can deene kinship relationships.

Investigating the Mechanisms Underlying Cooperation in Viscous Population Multi-Agent Systems

This paper presents a viscous population multi-agent system, which is claimed to provide scope for the emergence of cooperation both through iterated interaction and through kin selection. Theoretical examinations of iterated interaction and kin selection within the model are conducted and compared with empirical results. It is concluded that the model does allow for the operation both of itera...

Tags and the Evolution of Cooperation in Complex Environments

Cooperation in evolving populations of agents has been explained as arising from kin selection, reciprocity during repeated interactions, and indirect reciprocity through agent reputations. All of these mechanisms require significant agent capabilities, but recent research using computational models has shown that arbitrary markers called “tags” can be used to achieve significant levels of coop...

Emerging communication and cooperation in evolving agent societies

The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, it presents a new software system for empirical investigations of evolving agent societies in SUGARSCAPE-like environments. Second, it introduces a conceptual framework for modeling cooperation in an artificial society. In this framework the environmental pressure to cooperate is controllable by a single parameter, thus allowing systematic inv...

Cooperative self-organization to design robust and adaptive collectives

This paper highlights the benefits of using cooperation as the engine of adaptation and robustness for multiagent systems. Our work is based on the AMAS (Adaptive Multi-Agent System) approach which considers cooperation as a self-organization mechanism to obtain adequate emergent global behaviors for systems coupled with complex and dynamic environments. A multi-robot resource transportation ta...

Emergence-based Cooperation in a Multi-Agent System

We discuss antagonism and cooperation in multi-agent systems. We show theoretically and experimentally that cooperation can emerge in a multi-agent system despite the presence of antagonism. moreover antagonist situation can be capitalized on.
